The blank margins all around do transform (dissolve, lessen, fix) the portrait: to me, it projects the image, turns it into a screen, a kind of avatar of the artist, an exhibited object. The subject becomes object. Doing so, it makes the portrait all the more abstract, deprived of its liveliness and distinctive features.
Talking of the portrait itself, once appreciated at a reasonable size (downloaded), I like the mysterious framing (no eyes, no mouth, a spectral body), the beautiful, contrasted and partially fuzzy shadows.
You labelled it as "still", made it "still" with the wide framing; but as such, the portrait has the furtive quality of a (silent or tamed) being.
Interesting concept and fine quality of this image!
